Middle & Main Mahjong

Middle & Main Mahjong designs tiles, mats, racks and other accessories for all mahjong lovers (especially those who love the Southeast)! The company was founded by an aunt - niece pair in 2024 and is based in Charleston, SC.

What do you love most about mahjong?

Middle and Main is actually named for the reasons we love mahjong. Four women, sitting around a beautiful tablescape, communing, truly being with each other for a quiet moment in a busy world, the same way they have for so long. Middle and Main: a meeting place (like streets) & an intersection (of space, lives, & time) for the main events, which happen in the middle, both the games and the dynamics.

Why did you decide to start your own brand?

Glenn (favorite niece) and Liza (favorite aunt) became mahjong obsessed

and were loving the beautiful tiles that represented other places so we decided to bring in memories, places, and things that represent us.

What is special about your products?

All of our products are special to us! We truly love them as they came straight from our experiences and personalities. The color choices, patterns, bag

designs, etc. -we’ve associated them with stories from our lives. Even our product descriptions give a wink and a nod to our own memories or people we know and love. We actually collect milk glass, grew up with magnolias, hydrangeas, and dogwoods blooming in the yard, jumped on joggling boards, walk beaches regularly, use vintage quilts, and love sweet tea!

Tell us about your design process.

Glenn is a large scale artist who majored in studio art. She takes Liza’s ideas and brings them to 3D life.

Liza is particularly sentimental about all of the places and items we have been with our whole lives, and Glenn has a critical eye for all details. She won’t pass a design proposal that isn’t perfectly executed. Between the two of us, we create patterns and art that speak to our hearts and memories.

We actually fabricated two complete mahjong sets (Charleston and Florida) on our own. We still have them as a souvenir, and that is still our dream, to have the ability to make the tiles from start to finish, from the designs to the acrylic processing.

Can you tell us about a business challenge you’ve experienced and how it was solved or handled?

We have just grown so quickly, and we have had to make so many fast adjustments. Middle and Main Mahjong went from an idea to where we are now in two short years. We have had to be both flexible and hold tight to our essential values. We’re so new, but so far our strategy has been successful.

Provide a quick overview of your customer service policies.

Customer service is our top priority! We expect superlative customer service so we give that in return. We were raised to be polite, grateful, and thoughtful, and that’s made it an easy transition. We also regularly give a little surprise and delight, especially when met with a little enthusiasm. We truly are grateful for every single order and every single person who reaches out to us.
